Friends of the
Animals Foundation to Hold Annual Fundraiser
There will be lots of yowling and meowing echoing the Rocksport Bar &
Grill, 4209 SW Alaska in Seattle, at the upcoming Friends of the Animals
Foundation fundraiser on Saturday, April 28th, 1-3 p.m. The casual
benefit is in its fourth year. The event features live and silent
auctions.
“Come early to enjoy lunch,” said Judith Davis, adoption director for
the rescue.
One hundred percent of the proceeds go toward providing food, shelter,
medical attention and care to homeless, adoptable cats until permanent,
loving homes are found.
“We take in some the true hard luck cases,” said Lilo Benya, an auction
volunteer. “When we have open slots, we take animals from municipal
shelters that would have been destroyed due to pet overpopulation and
lack of homes.”
The shelter seeks auction donations from companies and individuals.
“You could donate your cabin on the lake for a weekend getaway. Sports
tickets and fun trips are also appreciated. Or you can ask your company
to sponsor the auction and advertise in the catalog. Last year’s
donations helped us to break all our adoption records -- over 430 homes
found for homeless companion animals in 2006. This year, we hope to
break more records,” says volunteer Teri Ensley.
Items already listed include dinner gift certificates, massage and
acupuncture sessions and spa baskets. Admission to the event is free and
children are welcome. For more information, contact Friends of the
Animals Foundation at 206-938-1266

2006 Kitten
Shower
Friends of the Animals Foundation will hold a Kitten Shower, from 12 to
3 p.m., on Sunday, July 30th at Next to Nature Pet Supply at 4543
California Ave SW in West Seattle.
The rescue has planned the whimsical event to be similar to a human baby
shower, with refreshments served. Adult cats and many of the kittens in
attendance will be available for adoption at the shower, which coincides
with kitten season. The shower will also coincide with the West Seattle
Farmers’ Market.
During kitten season, the charity takes in dozens of mother cats with
kittens, putting a tremendous strain on shelter resources and foster
homes. The season typically runs from May to November, with most litters
born in early spring or midsummer.
“The public is invited to our light-hearted event. It is a great
opportunity to meet the kittens and make a difference in their lives by
donating a gift from the kitten wish list,” says Judith Davis, Friends
of the Animals Foundation Adoption Director.
Items on the wish list include: canned or dry kitten food (including
Innova, Sensible Choice, Solid Gold and Healthwise), kitten milk
replacement (KMR, Just Born), non-clumping litter, kitten toys, baby
blankets, cleaning products including bleach and paper towels.

Annual Fundraiser
There will be lots of yowling and meowing echoing through the West
Seattle Golf Course, 4470 35th Ave SW, at the upcoming Friends of the
Animals Foundation fundraiser on April 22, 1-3pm. The casual benefit is
in its fourth year. The event features live entertainment, local
celebrities, a children-only bidding table, adoptable animals, and a
mostly silent auction. Admission to the event is free.
“This is our most important fundraising event of the year,” says
Adoption Director Judith Davis. “Proceeds help us to provide food,
shelter, medical attention and care to homeless, adoptable animals until
permanent, loving homes are found.” Items already in the auction include
2006 Husky Football Tickets, a week stay in Belize, dinner gift
certificates, massage and acupuncture sessions and spa baskets. Guest
auctioneer will be Cindi Rinehart of
KOMO 4 Northwest Afternoon.
Assisting at the auction will be Kids4Kats, a local animal welfare group
staffed and led by local children. The children hold fundraising events
for FAF and other local animal charities. Lisa Broadstone, the West
Seattle 12-year-old who conceptualized the group, will volunteer along
with her fellow volunteers.
The shelter seeks further auction donations from companies and
individuals.
“You could donate your cabin on the lake for a weekend getaway. Sports
tickets and fun trips are also appreciated. Or you can ask your company
to sponsor the auction and advertise in the catalog. Last year’s
donations helped us to break all our adoption records -- over 425 homes
found for homeless companion animals in 2005. This year, we hope to
break more records,” says FAF volunteer
Teri Ensley.
The golf course will offer light lunches and beverages for a small
additional charge at the event. For further information on the
benefit, website at fafseattle.org or call 206-938-1266.

West Seattle Resident Donates
Birthday Presents to Friends of the Animals Foundation
According to the four-legged residents at the Friends of the Animals
Foundation, real estate agent Cindy Craig knows how to throw a party.
On Saturday, January 7th, Craig celebrated her 50th birthday. Instead of
asking for the latest gadget, Craig and her husband, Chris Svehaug,
asked for help for animals in need.
“Chris grew up here in the neighborhood and our West Seattle friends
have
been very supportive of my career at
John
L. Scott, so we wanted to do something different for my big birthday
bash and give something back. When we sent the invitations in December,
we simply indicated 'No gifts, please, but your donations of
packaged pet food for local shelters would be appreciated.' We thought
we
would collect a modest amount, but our friends opened their
hearts to this worthy cause”, Craig stated.
Over 125 guests came to the party at West Seattle Golf Club and danced
to classic dance tunes played by Svehaug's group, The 40th Street Band.
In addition to bringing cat food, Craig's friends also made monetary
donations to FAF in her name. The following day, Craig and her family
came by the rescue with the gifts.
“When we were trying to decide which organization to contribute the pet
food
to, the catering manager at the golf course suggested Friends of the
Animals, as did our own veterinarian, Dr. Sherry Crow, who is also a
West Seattle resident. It's just really nice to know that West Seattle
is still much like the small town, with neighbors supporting
neighborhood causes,” Svegaug said.

Friends of the Animals
Foundation Joins 2005 Home for the Holidays Campaign
Friends of the Animals Foundation will join 2,000 animal shelters in 20
countries on Monday, November 7th at the official kickoff of
the annual Home for the Holidays animal adoption campaign. The worldwide
goal is to find lifelong homes for 325,000 orphaned dogs
and cats.
The first Home for the Holidays drive began in 1999, when the San
Diego-based Helen Woodward Animal Center organized 14 area
shelters to work together finding homes for orphaned animals during the
holiday season. By the end of the 6-week drive, 2,563
orphaned dogs and cats were placed with new families. Each animal “went
home” with its holiday meal of Iams food and a booklet of
coupons redeemable at animal stores.
Word of this success quickly spread and more than 130 animal shelters in
five states united for Home for the Holidays 2000,
completing more than 20,000 adoptions.
Actress and animal lover Diane Keaton signed on as national spokesperson
for the campaign in 2004, which included shelters across
the United States, Cyprus, Mexico, Ukraine, Brazil and Iran. When the
drive concluded, 313,123 animals had been adopted, making
Home for the Holidays 2004 the largest animal adoption event in history.
“Home for the Holidays will continue to break records,” according to its
creator, Michael M. Arms, President of Helen Woodward
Animal Center. “What better gift can any of us give during the holiday
season than to save the life of an orphaned animal?”
Friends of the Animals Foundation Director Judith Davis says that
adopting a shelter animal during the holidays is a necessity. “In the
past, many shelters discouraged families from adopting during the
holidays to avoid impulse decisions. But it’s time to face the facts.
More families invite animals into their homes during the holidays than
any other time of year. If our shelters turn them away, we may
as well give them a map and send them to a puppy or kitten mill while
our orphans continue to wake up behind bars.” Davis points
out that the goal of a animal store is to make a sale, while the goal of
an animal shelter is to match the needs of the animals with the
desires of the families. “We want to help these families find the right
dog or cat for their lifestyle. Companion animals are a lifetime
commitment.”
Over 2,000 animal shelters in 20 countries will take part when Keaton
kicks off Home for the Holidays 2005 on Monday, November
7th. The campaign will continue through January 10th with a goal of
325,000 adoptions.
Home for the Holidays 2005 is sponsored by The Iams Company, PETCO
Animal Supplies, the PETCO Foundation and Helen
Woodward Animal Center. Arms says, “We’re proud to be working with these
companies that are dedicated to saving lives and
strengthening the bond between people and animals.”
